Placement in a Minnesota LTCF by Another State

When a person age 21 or over is placed in a Minnesota LTCF by another state that person remains the placing state’s financial responsibility and the person is a resident of that state

The same holds true for people placed in a facility in another state by Minnesota; Minnesota remains financially responsible and the person is a resident of Minnesota. Placements into a facility in another state are typically only made when required services are not available in Minnesota, it is an emergency placement or there is a hardship in placing the client in Minnesota.

More information about how to determine state residency for a person under age 21 can be found in the EPM.
